FAQ

Mahabalipuram has a quality that day-trippers rarely get to experience: the town at its own pace, once the coach groups have left. The Shore Temple at dusk, with the Bay of Bengal behind it and the light dropping low, is one of the most quietly extraordinary sights on the Coromandel Coast. The Pancha Rathas, five monolithic chariots carved from single boulders, and the vast bas-relief of Arjuna’s Penance reward the kind of slow, attentive looking that a rushed morning visit cannot provide. Staying overnight, with a beach resort as your base, gives the monuments the time they deserve and adds the pleasure of the coastline itself: long walks on relatively uncrowded beaches, fresh seafood at the water’s edge, and mornings that belong entirely to you.

October through March offers the most comfortable conditions along the Coromandel Coast. The northeast monsoon, which typically runs from October to December, brings rain to this part of Tamil Nadu, so November can be unpredictable, but the months immediately before and after are excellent. January through March is ideal: mild temperatures, clear skies, and a calm Bay of Bengal. The summer months from April through June can be intensely hot and humid. For those specifically interested in the monuments, the cooler morning hours in the winter months make outdoor exploration far more pleasurable.

Mahabalipuram is about 60 km south of Chennai along the East Coast Road, a scenic coastal drive that takes roughly one and a half to two hours depending on traffic. A private car arranged through your hotel is the most comfortable way to make the journey, and a knowledgeable driver can point out the fishing villages, salt pans, and coastal temples along the route that you would otherwise pass without noticing. Chennai International Airport is the natural gateway, with direct connections from most major Indian cities and several international hubs.

Three to four nights allows the destination to open up properly. The first day is naturally given over to the UNESCO monuments: Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas, Arjuna’s Penance, and the cave sanctuaries. The second day invites a slower rhythm: a morning on the beach, an afternoon in the town’s craft workshops where the stone-carving tradition that built the temples continues today, and an evening at a seafood restaurant watching the Bay of Bengal at dusk. A third or fourth day works well as a base for exploring the broader Coromandel Coast, or simply as time to let the resort itself do what it does best.

Each property sits at a slightly different point on the spectrum. Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay is the only premium resort actually within Mahabalipuram town, which makes it the most immersive choice for travelers who want to walk to the monuments and feel embedded in the place. InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram and Sheraton Grand Chennai are both positioned along East Coast Road and suit those who want a full resort experience with strong dining and spa facilities alongside easy access to the heritage sites. Taj Fisherman’s Cove, built on the ramparts of an old Dutch fort at Covelong Beach, has the most distinctive history and the Taj’s signature Jiva Spa, making it well suited to those who want a longer coastal stay where the resort itself is a significant part of the experience.

The Coromandel Coast produces some of Tamil Nadu’s finest seafood, and the resorts here make the most of it. The Wharf 2.0 at Radisson Blu Temple Bay is an award-winning seafood restaurant positioned right on the shore and worth visiting even if you are not staying there. Taj Fisherman’s Cove’s Bay View restaurant does fresh seafood with the beach immediately in front of you. Beyond the resorts, Mahabalipuram’s town itself has a clutch of small restaurants along the beach road that serve excellent crab, prawns, and fish cooked in the local Chettinad and coastal Tamil style, often at a fraction of the resort price. A meal at one of these is as much a part of the destination as the monuments.

Easily, and it makes for a natural itinerary. Chennai rewards two to three days in its own right: the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, the Government Museum, the colonial architecture of George Town, and a serious engagement with the city’s exceptional restaurant scene, which covers everything from traditional Tamil meals on banana leaves to some of South India’s finest modern dining. From Chennai, Mahabalipuram is a straightforward drive south along the coast. The two places have a complementary character: Chennai is dense, historic, and urban; Mahabalipuram is coastal, unhurried, and ancient. Together they give a more complete picture of Tamil Nadu than either does alone.
